Insecurity: Fatalities, Abduction on increase in 2024, -beacon security and Intelligence Report

The overall metric of insecurity in Nigeria has risen by an average of 12.02 percent in January 2024 when compared to December 2023 as 727 incidents were recorded.
This is contained in a special security report issued by Beacon Security and Intelligence Ltd (formerly Beacon Consulting) recently in Abuja.
The report had analysed security developments across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja from 1st of January 2024 to 31st of January 2024.
The report says fatality rates have increased by 15.88 percent as 1,022 cases were recorded when compared to December 2023.
More so, the report stated that abduction cases are on a high surge resulting in a 39.88 percent increase when compared to December 2023. A total of 726 persons were abducted across 250 local government areas in 36 states and the FCT Abuja.
The Managing Director of Beacon Security and Intelligence Ltd, Dr. Kabir Adamu, while commenting on the report drew attention to the relevance of using data to track security developments as a tool for security management and investing in improving the intelligence cycle.
He advocated for the Executive and Legislature to adopt a result-based framework using metrics backed by an effective monitoring and evaluation (M and E) framework in its oversight functions that will ensure its ability in the implementation of the budget across all sectors greatly support removing the drivers and root causes of insecurity in the country.
The report shows that the most affected segment of the society remains the civilians with several non-state armed groups (NSAGs) including criminals and bandits in Northwest and North Central states as the main perpetrators.
The report also provides the techniques, tactics and methodologies adopted by these groups
"In addition, hazard exposures contributed significantly to the number of civilian fatalities and
injuries, especially in the Southern part of the country.
"The Federal Capital Territory, Abuja continues to rank high in the locations with the highest number
of abductees with 73 civilians abducted in January 2024.
"Zamfara and Kaduna states ranked 1st and
2nd with 177 and 133 abductees respectively. the FCT, criminals and bandits constitute the
primary actors of the abduction incidents" part of the report says
